The plaque in Genoa

At the Galata Museo del Mare in Genoa there is a plaque In memoria del p/fo Principessa Mafalda. It was put up by the Associazione Memoria Condivisa on 25 October 2012, the 85th anniversary of the shipwreck.

It confirms four things: the departure from Genoa on 11 October 1927, the 1,259 people on board, the cause — lo sfilamento dell’asse dell’elica, the propeller shaft that worked loose — and the 314 victims.

And it adds a fifth, which seldom appears in an official Italian source: the disaster remained “a lungo nascosto dalle responsabilità del regime fascista e della compagnia armatrice”. For a long time, hidden by the responsibility of the Fascist regime and of the shipping company.

The numbers are not unanimous. Other counts give 1,255 people on board, and the death toll varies with who did the counting and when. The plaque is one of the few sources that Italy itself has put on a wall.
